There are times in your life when you may feel lost and confused. This may be difficult to admit if you have been succeeding in many areas of life when all of the sudden you find yourself without clarity in the answers you seek. It's not always the easiest step to take reaching out for help from another person in a deep personal matter. I am well aware of these factors when I meet with each of my clients. Therefore, I have found my gentle, yet insightful approach has been very effective thru the years of working in a variety of clinical settings. It is my hope for you that you find our work together helpful in the areas that led you to initially reach out for assistance at this time in your life but also that we find deeper insight and a better understanding of the assets within you that have perhaps been dormant for some time.
I have passion while working with people on their journey in life. This passion started with my interest years ago in the field of psychology. Twenty-eight years later, that passion is still present as I guide my clients to deeper and new understandings of themselves. As a psychologist, my interests lie in behavioral medicine, wherein many of the clients I work with are struggling with a chronic medical condition as our primary focus or as a secondary focus. Other areas of my clinical expertise include anxiety and panic disorders, depression, life transitions and acute or chronic medical conditions. Some of the chronic medical conditions I work with might include: pre-surgical or procedural preparation, irritable bowel syndrome and related disorders, cancer, procedural anxiety and pain management, childbirth preparation, pill swallowing problems, and when a patient is not responding to proper medical treatment. I also see children/adolescents (age 14 or older) with medical problems, such as encopresis, or procedural anxiety and pain management, vocal cord dysfunction, and sports induced asthma.
During my decades of working and teaching in clinical settings, I gained extensive experience and knowledge related to clients with general complaints such as anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, fear of flying, aging, bipolar disorder, cancer, grief/loss, infertility, mens issues, personal development, sexuality, smoking cessation, performance anxiety, social phobia, mood disorders, and coping with life transitions (post-college adjustment, middle-age, retirement-age).
Finally, I also have a variety of skill sets and experiences that allow me to provide a variety of consulting services to attorneys. I assist in developing strategy concerning psychological issues, review records, examining parties in a law suit, testifying at depositions and in court in personal injury matters. My qualifications include 28 years practicing clinically. During that time, I was, and still am, fortunate to teach at a few of the professional school of psychology and have trained hundreds if not thousands of Doctorate and Masters level clinicians working throughout the Chicagoland area.
What is therapy/treatment typically like with Dr. Oster?? Here are a few words from Dr. Oster on the topic.....
I was always fascinated by people's behavior, how they think and understand the world around them. I would agree that many of us, psychological service providers, also want understand ourselves better as well. In my own journey, I faced a decision to pursue psychology or medicine. At first psychology was the choice because medicine would have taken so long. As it turned out, psychology took just as long. Secondly, I was drawn to the idea of working primarily with words and image, thus - my interest and hypnosis.
I see the patient's role as that of collaborator, a partner. I believe we all have within us resources to solve most of our problems. In my role, I bring empathy and technical knowledge but the patient brings tools for us to use – their symptoms and experiences.
My role in our relationship is to be open to the patient’s experience of their symptoms or illness and understand that experience. I apply technical and artistic skills to help the patient to integrate their condition into their life, restoring or resetting a balance in all spheres of life, the biological, psychological, social and spiritual.
Health is achieved when there is a balance and interaction between the four spheres mentioned above. My modalities help this process by demonstrating to the patient that they can influence their health. They learn tools that they can apply to their current problems and elsewhere in their lives and experience a sense of mastery.
